{"id":2697,"date":"2015-02-05T22:14:57","date_gmt":"2015-02-05T22:14:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/leicestershirehistory.co.uk\/?page_id=2697"},"modified":"2015-02-05T22:14:57","modified_gmt":"2015-02-05T22:14:57","slug":"protestant-nonconformity-in-knipton","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/leicestershirehistory.co.uk\/?page_id=2697","title":{"rendered":"Protestant Nonconformity in Knipton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The village of Knipton is in the extreme north-east of Leicestershire, 2 miles south of Belvoir Castle and about 13 miles north of Melton Mowbray.<\/p>\n<p>Around eight &#8216;Anabaptists&#8217; met on Sundays in Knipton in 1669 at the house of Francis Templeman, while the service was taking place in the parish church. They were described as being &#8216;of a mean sort of people&#8217;, and their &#8216;teacher&#8217; was Tobias Watson, a carpenter.<a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Pam\/Documents\/new%20web%20pages\/Protestant%20Nonconformity%20in%20Branston.docx#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a> Nine &#8216;Anabaptists&#8217;\u00a0 were recorded in 1676.<a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Pam\/Documents\/new%20web%20pages\/Protestant%20Nonconformity%20in%20Branston.docx#_ftn2\">[2]<\/a> By 1706 there were said to be three families of &#8216;Anabaptists&#8217; in the parish, but no meting house. In 1718 it was said that they met quarterly in a private house, around 18 people attended and their teacher was called Johnson.<a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Pam\/Documents\/new%20web%20pages\/Protestant%20Nonconformity%20in%20Branston.docx#_ftn3\">[3]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A General Baptist chapel in the village is said to have been built in 1700.<a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Pam\/Documents\/new%20web%20pages\/Protestant%20Nonconformity%20in%20Branston.docx#_ftn4\">[4]<\/a> In 1851 it could accommodate 90 worshippers. There were no services there on Sunday 30 March 1851 , but there was usually an evening service, generally attended by around 30 people.<a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Pam\/Documents\/new%20web%20pages\/Protestant%20Nonconformity%20in%20Branston.docx#_ftn5\">[5]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A Wesleyan Reform \u2018preaching house\u2019 opened in 1850, but was not a separate building.
