{"id":2712,"date":"2015-02-05T23:31:04","date_gmt":"2015-02-05T23:31:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/leicestershirehistory.co.uk\/?page_id=2712"},"modified":"2015-02-06T13:03:03","modified_gmt":"2015-02-06T13:03:03","slug":"protestant-nonconformity-in-tonge-and-wilson","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/leicestershirehistory.co.uk\/?page_id=2712","title":{"rendered":"Protestant nonconformity in Tonge and Wilson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The small villages of Tonge and Wilson are in north-west Leicestershire, on the Derbyshire border, just to the north of Breedon on the Hill, and within that ancient parish.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\">Tonge<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Thomas Ogle was licensed to hold Congregational services in John Kendall\u2019s house in Tonge in 1672.<a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Pam\/Documents\/new%20web%20pages\/Protestant%20nonconformity%20in%20Breedon%20on%20the%20Hill.docx#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Wesleyan Methodists<\/h4>\n<p>A Wesleyan chapel is listed in the Post Office directory of 1855 and by Kelly in 1881,<a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Pam\/Documents\/new%20web%20pages\/Protestant%20nonconformity%20in%20Breedon%20on%20the%20Hill.docx#_ftn2\">[2]<\/a> but is not mentioned by White. It is likely that the smaller Wesleyan Methodist chapel recorded in the 1851 religious census for Breedon,<a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Pam\/Documents\/new%20web%20pages\/Protestant%20nonconformity%20in%20Breedon%20on%20the%20Hill.docx#_ftn3\">[3]<\/a> and within White\u2019s directory for <a title=\"Protestant nonconformity in Breedon on the Hill\" href=\"http:\/\/leicestershirehistory.co.uk\/?page_id=1744\">Breedon<\/a>, was actually in Tonge.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\">Wilson<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>Wesleyan Methodists<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A Wesleyan Chapel was built in 1826,<a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Pam\/Documents\/new%20web%20pages\/Protestant%20nonconformity%20in%20Breedon%20on%20the%20Hill.docx#_ftn4\">[4]<\/a> which attracted a congregation of 50 people in 1829.<a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Pam\/Documents\/new%20web%20pages\/Protestant%20nonconformity%20in%20Breedon%20on%20the%20Hill.docx#_ftn5\">[5]<\/a> On 30 March 1851, there were services in the afternoon and evening, attended by 15 and 50 people respectively.<a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Pam\/Documents\/new%20web%20pages\/Protestant%20nonconformity%20in%20Breedon%20on%20the%20Hill.docx#_ftn6\">[6]<\/a> A Sunday school met in the afternoon, attended by 35 people.<a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Pam\/Documents\/new%20web%20pages\/Protestant%20nonconformity%20in%20Breedon%20on%20the%20Hill.docx#_ftn7\">[7]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Return to <\/b><a title=\"Protestant Nonconformity\" href=\"http:\/\/www.leicestershirehistory.co.uk\/?page_id=389\"><b><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Protestant Nonconformity: A-Z<\/span><\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<div><br clear=\"all\" \/><\/p>\n<hr align=\"left\" size=\"1\" width=\"33%\" \/>\n<div>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Pam\/Documents\/new%20web%20pages\/Protestant%20nonconformity%20in%20Breedon%20on%20the%20Hill.docx#_ftnref1\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">[1]<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"> Cal.
