The village is about 5 miles north-west of Hinckley, and is still quite small and rural today. It is perhaps best known for the race track at Mallory Park. A second settlement grew up within the parish at Earl Shilton, and by the mid-19th century this had become one of the largest villages in the county. Nonconformity prospered in Earl Shilton, although the core industry of framework knitting could not sustain the population, especially in the \u2018hungry\u2019 1840s, and there was severe poverty.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: large;\">Kirkby Mallory <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">There were 5 nonconformists in 1676 and 114 who conformed to the Anglican church.<\/span><a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Pam\/Documents\/WIP\/Crowd%20sourcing\/Crowd%20sourcing%20relig\/draft%20pages\/PN%20in%20Earl%20Shilton%20and%20Kirkby%20Mallory.docx#_ftn1\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">[1]<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\"> In 1706 the population included four Baptists and four Catholics, but there was no meeting house.<\/span><a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Pam\/Documents\/WIP\/Crowd%20sourcing\/Crowd%20sourcing%20relig\/draft%20pages\/PN%20in%20Earl%20Shilton%20and%20Kirkby%20Mallory.docx#_ftn2\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">[2]<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\"> In 1720, Thomas Boston\u2019s house was registered for nonconformist worship.<\/span><a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Pam\/Documents\/WIP\/Crowd%20sourcing\/Crowd%20sourcing%20relig\/draft%20pages\/PN%20in%20Earl%20Shilton%20and%20Kirkby%20Mallory.docx#_ftn3\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">[3]<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\"> No meeting houses were noted in 1829,<\/span><a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Pam\/Documents\/WIP\/Crowd%20sourcing\/Crowd%20sourcing%20relig\/draft%20pages\/PN%20in%20Earl%20Shilton%20and%20Kirkby%20Mallory.docx#_ftn4\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">[4]<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\"> and no later evidence of nonconformity has been found.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: large;\">Earl Shilton<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">Early nonconformity<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">In 1669 there were two conventicles within the parish, one of Presbyterians, led by Matthew Clarke, the ejected rector of Narborough, and the other of Baptists. They each comprised about 50 people \u2018of the meaner sort\u2019.<\/span><a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Pam\/Documents\/WIP\/Crowd%20sourcing\/Crowd%20sourcing%20relig\/draft%20pages\/PN%20in%20Earl%20Shilton%20and%20Kirkby%20Mallory.docx#_ftn5\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">[5]<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\"> In 1676, 33 nonconformists, 3 Catholics and 198 conforming Anglicans were enumerated.<\/span><a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Pam\/Documents\/WIP\/Crowd%20sourcing\/Crowd%20sourcing%20relig\/draft%20pages\/PN%20in%20Earl%20Shilton%20and%20Kirkby%20Mallory.docx#_ftn6\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">[6]<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">The Evans list of 1705 included Earl Shilton within a Leicester meeting of mixed General and Particular Baptists, whose preachers were Thomas Davys, Henry Trail and Zachary Stanton.<\/span><a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Pam\/Documents\/WIP\/Crowd%20sourcing\/Crowd%20sourcing%20relig\/draft%20pages\/PN%20in%20Earl%20Shilton%20and%20Kirkby%20Mallory.docx#_ftn7\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">[7]<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\"> The visitation return for 1706 mentions 4 Quakers, 17 Presbyterians, 26 Baptists and a Catholic among the 106 families who lived there. Both the Baptists and Presbyterians had a house where they met, weekly for the Baptists, but there were only occasional Presbyterian meetings. By 1709 there were no nonconformist meetings at all, although that appears to have been a temporary situation. In 1712 the Presbyterians were said to meet there monthly, and the Baptists had several houses where they met. In all, 20 of the 110 families living there did not attend the Church.<\/span><a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Pam\/Documents\/WIP\/Crowd%20sourcing\/Crowd%20sourcing%20relig\/draft%20pages\/PN%20in%20Earl%20Shilton%20and%20Kirkby%20Mallory.docx#_ftn8\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">[8]<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">Many properties were licensed for nonconformist worship between 1720 and 1802, and it is not always easy to identify the denomination concerned. font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">As early as 1650, some people at Earl Shilton were objecting to infant Baptism on the grounds that there was no such command in the New Testament, and Nathaniel Stephens, the Presbyterian minister at Fenny Drayton, visited to try to understand why so many had left the Anglican church.<\/span><a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Pam\/Documents\/WIP\/Crowd%20sourcing\/Crowd%20sourcing%20relig\/draft%20pages\/PN%20in%20Earl%20Shilton%20and%20Kirkby%20Mallory.docx#_ftn21\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">[21]<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\"> That year, Thomas Webster and Nathan Jones, representing the Baptist meeting at Earl Shilton, subscriber to the Midland Confession. <\/span><a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Pam\/Documents\/WIP\/Crowd%20sourcing\/Crowd%20sourcing%20relig\/draft%20pages\/PN%20in%20Earl%20Shilton%20and%20Kirkby%20Mallory.docx#_ftn22\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">[22]<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">Then in 1656, William Inge and Thomas Christian, at a conference held in Stamford, engaged to stir up Earl Shilton and Mountsorrel towards the support of two Baptist \u2018messengers\u2019 to evangelise the area.<\/span><a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/Pam\/Documents\/WIP\/Crowd%20sourcing\/Crowd%20sourcing%20relig\/draft%20pages\/PN%20in%20Earl%20Shilton%20and%20Kirkby%20Mallory.docx#_ftn23\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">[23]<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000; There were three services on 30 March 1851, with 98 people attending in the morning, 82 in the afternoon and 104 in the evening.
