The only nonconformists were Baptists, who arrived in the late eighteenth century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">General Baptist<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A meeting place was established and licensed in 1788 for \u2018Baptists\u2019, in what was described simply as \u2018a building\u2019.<\/span><a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/PamFisher\/Documents\/Thurlaston.docx#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> \u2018General Baptists\u2019 were counted at 200 on the 1829 Return of Religious Meeting Places.<\/span><a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/PamFisher\/Documents\/Thurlaston.docx#_ftn2\">[2]<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Later evidence from directories and the 1851 Religious Census noted that a chapel had been built in 1787, as a separate building, and it is likely that this was the same chapel.<\/span><a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/PamFisher\/Documents\/Thurlaston.docx#_ftn3\">[3]<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> This congregation simply called themselves \u2018Baptists\u2019 in 1851.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The chapel was rebuilt in 1842, at a cost of \u00a3250.<\/span><a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/PamFisher\/Documents\/Thurlaston.docx#_ftn4\">[4]<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> At the time of the 1851 Religious Census it contained room for 350 sittings, 250 of which were free, as well as 50 standing. On census day the congregation size was 225 and 287 for services held in the afternoon and evening respectively. These figures were also given for average attendance. There is no evidence of a Sunday School.<\/span><a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/PamFisher\/Documents\/Thurlaston.docx#_ftn5\">[5]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Kelly\u2019s Directory of Leicestershire in 1908 indicated that there was a \u2018Baptist\u2019 chapel, erected in 1814.<\/span><a title=\"\" href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/PamFisher\/Documents\/Thurlaston.docx#_ftn6\">[6]<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> The date does not tally with the details above, and no other source confirms this information, which is not repeated in earlier or later Kelly\u2019s directories.
