It will proceed land (strip) by land, describing the location of each by field and furlong, and by the occupiers of the lands on each side. The most common terriers describe the land owned by the church, and are known as glebe terriers. They were usually compiled for individuals, for example when land was sold or provided as a marriage portion. Major landowners might also have a survey book, perhaps accompanying an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/leicestershirehistory.co.uk\/?page_id=1152\">estate map<\/a>, listing the size of each parcel of their land, its use and,\u00a0if rented, the name of the occupier. She also owned some meadow. Her total landholding comprised:<\/p><p>38.5 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 acres of arable land (including fallow) plus<\/p><p>13 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 acres of leys (grass strips) in the open fields, plus a<\/p><p>\u00a0 1 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 acre close adjacent to her house, plus<\/p><p><u>\u00a0 5.75<\/u>\u00a0\u00a0 acres meadow<\/p><p>58.25 \u00a0 acres<\/p><p>This tells us that a yardland in Queniborough contained 23 acres.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Terriers and Surveys A terrier is a written record of a landholding in the open fields.
