Protestant Nonconformity in Barkestone le Vale and Redmile

Barkestone le Vale and Redmile are small villages in the Vale of Belvoir in north Leicestershire, about 10-12 miles north of Melton Mowbray.

Barkestone le Vale

No dissenters were recorded in 1676,[1] nor in 1706.[2] No response was made to the 1829 meeting house return. However, a Primitive Methodist chapel had been built in 1825, with 50 free seats, 60 other seats and standing room for 20. Afternoon and evening services were held on 31 March 1851, attended by 77 and 90 worshippers respectively.[3] Neither this chapel, nor any other in the village, is noted by the compilers of trade directories.

Redmile

There was just one nonconformist recorded in 1676,[4] but none was noted in 1706.[5] No response was made to the 1829 meeting house return, although a Primitive Methodist chapel had been built in 1828.[6]

There were services in the afternoon and evening on 31 March 1851, with 30 people attending in the afternoon and 70 in the evening. Sunday schools also met at those ties, with 59 present in the afternoon, and just 16 in the evening. On occasions when there was a morning service it was attended by about 75 people.[7] The chapel was rebuilt in 1869, at a cost of £620, raised by subscription.[8]
